The design story behind GEAR6—a motorcycle navigation and community app created to help riders plan routes, ride together, share journeys and stay prepared on the road.
Motorcycle rides rarely begin when the engine starts.
They begin in a group chat—with five people suggesting different destinations, screenshots of routes, changing meeting points, weather doubts, fuel-stop questions and one rider who still has not confirmed.
The ride itself may feel free. Organising it often does not.
That tension became the starting point for GEAR6, a motorcycle navigation and community app my friend and I created for riders. He led the development, while I shaped the product experience and its complete visual world: the app’s UI and UX, brand expression, website, store presence, advertisements, social-media creatives and launch posters.
GEAR6 was not designed as another generic social network with motorcycles added to it. We wanted to create one focused place where riders could plan, navigate, connect, share and stay prepared—before, during and after a ride.
Riders already use many digital tools. The problem is that the experience is fragmented.
A route may live in a navigation app. Ride coordination happens in a messaging group. Photographs go to a social platform. Motorcycle information is stored somewhere else—or nowhere. Emergency details may exist only in a rider’s wallet or phone contacts.
Each tool solves one small part of the journey, but the rider has to hold everything together.
We saw an opportunity for a product built around the complete riding workflow:
Discover people and riding communities
Plan a route and organise a group ride
Invite riders and manage participation
Follow the journey with live ride information
Share posts, stories and experiences
Build a personal garage and rider identity
Keep emergency information accessible when it matters

The idea was not to put every imaginable feature into one app. It was to bring the most connected parts of motorcycle life into one coherent system.
A motorcycle app should understand more than navigation
For a car driver, navigation is often transactional: choose a destination, follow the fastest route and arrive.
Motorcycle rides can be different.
The route itself is part of the experience. Riders may care about scenic roads, curves, group coordination, stopping points, distance, time and the people travelling beside them. A ride can be a social event, a personal ritual or an escape from routine.

That meant we could not treat GEAR6 as a standard map application.
The product had to understand three connected layers:
The rider — profile, motorcycle, preferences and identity
The group — invitations, participation, communication and visibility
The journey — route, navigation, live status and shared memories
This model helped us evaluate every feature. If an idea did not improve the rider, group or journey experience, it did not automatically deserve space in the product.
Designing the complete rider journey
The UX challenge was not creating individual screens. It was making a long, variable journey feel simple.
A rider might open GEAR6 to scroll through the community feed. Another might need to create a route immediately. Someone on an active ride requires completely different information from someone updating their garage at home.
The core flow developed around real moments:
Enter the app and establish a rider identity
Discover riders, posts, stories and motorcycle content
Explore a map and find relevant rides
Create or join a planned ride
Add the route, date, time and ride preferences
Invite people and review who has accepted
Begin the trip and follow the live route
Access important information during an emergency
Return to the community and share the journey
Instead of forcing every action into one dashboard, the interface gives each riding state an appropriate priority.
Before the ride, planning matters. During the ride, clarity and glanceability matter. After the ride, memory and community matter.
Route planning without unnecessary friction
Planning a motorcycle route sounds simple until real-world details appear.
A group needs a starting point, destination, date, meeting time, distance and estimated duration. Depending on the ride, organisers may also need visibility controls, rider eligibility, proximity information or additional stops.
The design needed to expose enough information to make a route useful without turning creation into a form-filling exercise.
We organised the route experience around a clear progression:
Define where the ride begins and ends.
Understand the route visually.
Set when the group will meet and depart.
Add only the ride preferences that matter.
Review the essential information before publishing.
Maps naturally contain a lot of visual detail, so the interface surrounding them had to stay disciplined. Strong contrast, focused controls and a limited accent palette help the rider distinguish the map from the actions layered above it.
Designing for group rides
A solo route can be changed at any moment. A group ride creates responsibility.
People need to know:
Who organised the ride?
Is it public or private?
Who has been invited?
Who accepted?
When and where is the meeting point?
Has the ride started?
Where are the other riders?
These are not secondary administrative details. They are the infrastructure of trust.
The GEAR6 experience makes ride status visible and gives organisers a structured way to move from an idea to an active trip. Invitations, acceptance and live participation become connected stages rather than unrelated screens.
This was an important product-design lesson: social features are not created merely by adding comments or followers. A product becomes social when people can understand one another’s intent, status and next action.
Live ride information must be glanceable
Any interface used around a moving motorcycle demands restraint.
A rider cannot process dense panels, subtle contrast or complicated interaction while travelling. The most important information needs immediate hierarchy, and nonessential controls should not compete for attention.
The live ride experience was designed around clear route visibility and useful telemetry. Depending on supported device capabilities and app state, GEAR6 can bring together information such as speed, route progress and group positions within a focused heads-up experience.
The design principles were straightforward:
Large, legible information
Strong day and night contrast
Minimal interaction during motion
Obvious primary controls
Clear map and route separation
No decorative animation competing with navigation
Good mobility design is often defined by what it refuses to show.
Emergency information as a product responsibility
Motorcycle products cannot speak about community without thinking about safety.
GEAR6 includes an emergency-ready concept that lets a rider keep important information and contacts accessible. The broader system also explores a rider-controlled emergency QR experience that can reveal useful information when enabled and protect it when disabled.
This required careful UX thinking.
Emergency information must be quick to reach, but personal data should not be permanently exposed. The rider needs to understand what is visible, when it is visible and how to turn access off.
The design challenge was not simply adding an emergency screen. It was balancing accessibility, control and privacy in a stressful context.
Building a rider identity through the garage
Motorcycles are rarely just transportation to the people who love them.
A bike can represent engineering taste, independence, memory, community and years of personal modification. That is why a rider profile should not feel like a generic social-media account.
The GEAR6 garage gives motorcycles a meaningful place inside the user’s identity. It helps riders keep key details together while letting the profile tell a more personal story.
This also creates a better community dynamic. People do not connect only through names and profile photos; they discover one another through motorcycles, journeys and shared riding interests.
Creating a visual language that belongs to motorcycling
Motorcycle design often falls into predictable extremes.
One direction is aggressively mechanical: carbon fibre everywhere, metallic bevels, speed lines and instrument-cluster clichés. The other is a clean technology interface so neutral that it could belong to a banking or fitness app.
GEAR6 needed energy without visual noise and utility without corporate coldness.
The visual system uses:
A dark, road-ready foundation
A distinctive orange accent for energy and action
Clear, modern typography
Strong map and card hierarchy
Purposeful status colours
Bold photography and motorcycle imagery
Rounded interface elements that remain practical rather than playful
Orange provides identity and highlights key actions, but it is not applied everywhere. Restraint makes the accent more useful. Dark surfaces support night-time relevance and motorcycle culture, while careful contrast prevents the interface from becoming a wall of black panels.
The goal was to make GEAR6 feel engineered for riders without imitating a motorcycle dashboard literally.
Designing beyond the app
A product is not experienced only after installation.
For many riders, the first interaction with GEAR6 happens through a poster, an Instagram creative, an App Store screenshot, a short video or the website. If those pieces tell different stories, the product feels fragmented before it is even downloaded.
My design role extended across the complete launch ecosystem:
This consistency matters. The orange used to guide an important action inside the app should feel related to the orange in a launch poster. The route shown in an advertisement should resemble the actual route experience. Store screenshots should communicate real product value rather than presenting imaginary features.
Brand design and product design are not separate layers placed on top of one another. Together, they create the rider’s expectation—and the product must fulfil it.
Designing the GEAR6 website
The website needed to explain a fairly broad product without becoming a directory of features.
Its current story is built around a clear idea: ride, share, discover and stay connected.
The page introduces GEAR6 as an all-in-one companion for motorcycle riders, then groups the experience into understandable outcomes:
Feed and stories
Ride planning
Garage profiles
Emergency readiness
Bike discovery
Privacy controls
Route building
Live ride telemetry
Community sharing
The website uses product mockups and motorcycle imagery to connect utility with aspiration. Riders should understand what the app does, but they should also imagine where it might take them.
They do not begin by reading every paragraph. They scan the icon, title, first screenshots, rating signals and a few lines of description. This makes App Store and Google Play creative work a form of compressed product design.
The first images must answer:
Is this made for riders like me?
What is the main benefit?
Does the product look trustworthy?
Is it about navigation, community or both?
What can I do immediately after installing it?
Rather than turning every screenshot into a list, the GEAR6 store story connects one clear message to one recognisable product moment. The visual system stays consistent with the live app, building trust between advertising and actual use.
What I learned designing a product with a developer friend
GEAR6 is personal to me because it was not a distant client handoff.
My friend developed the product, and I designed it. That simple division does not describe the real process. Product work constantly crosses the border between design and engineering.
A map interaction that looks elegant in a static frame may behave differently with live location data. A group-ride state may need to account for permissions, network delays and people joining at different times. An emergency feature carries privacy questions that cannot be solved with styling.
Working closely taught me several things.
Design decisions become better when implementation enters early
The best time to discover a technical constraint is while the flow is still flexible—not after every screen has been polished.
A prototype should answer behaviour questions
It is easy to use prototypes only for presentation. For GEAR6, their greater value was showing how ride states, invitations, map actions and navigation transitions should behave.
Edge cases are part of the experience
What happens when a rider rejects an invitation? When location access is denied? When no nearby riders are available? When a route has not started? Empty, loading, error and permission states are not leftovers; they are the product.
The system matters more than one beautiful screen
GEAR6 spans community, maps, profiles, ride planning, emergency tools and content. Visual consistency had to survive all of them. A reusable design system made that possible.
Why motorcycle community apps are a meaningful design space
Riding is both individual and collective.
A person may ride to be alone, yet still depend on a community for route knowledge, safety, maintenance advice and shared experiences. This creates a fascinating product space where navigation, identity and belonging overlap.
The opportunity is larger than creating another feed. A genuinely useful motorcycle community app can help riders:
Discover compatible riding groups
Coordinate trips with less confusion
Preserve and share routes
Build trust before meeting
Stay visible during group rides
Keep essential information available
Learn from other riders’ experiences
The difficult part is maintaining usefulness as the community grows. Noise, spam, unsafe behaviour and unclear privacy can damage trust quickly. Community features therefore need moderation, reporting, permissions and thoughtful defaults—not just engagement mechanics.
GEAR6 is still the beginning
Shipping a product does not finish its design.
Real riders reveal which assumptions were right, which actions remain confusing and which features matter more on the road than they did in a design file. Every release creates a new cycle of observation, refinement and prioritisation.
That is what makes GEAR6 meaningful to me. It is not only a portfolio concept. It is a living product built by two friends, available to real riders on two major mobile platforms.
I designed the screens, but also the way GEAR6 introduces itself to the world—from the smallest interface state to the website, posters, store assets and campaigns surrounding it.
The ambition is simple:
Help riders spend less time coordinating disconnected tools and more time riding together.
